Manhattan College is seeking a Chief Data Officer (CDO) and Executive Director of Institutional Research. He/She will provide strategic oversight of the College’s data strategy and data analysis functions and is a member of the President’s Cabinet. This position will play a key role in data management to help the college achieve its objectives as articulated in its mission and strategic plan. The CDO will provide leadership in the generation, analysis, and dissemination of business, academic, and administrative data for use in planning, policy-formulation, decision making, and budgeting to ensure that there is reliable evidence that the College and all academic and administrative units achieve the objectives as articulated in the strategic plan.

The CDO is responsible for institutional data analyses, data visualizations, data architecture, data management, and institutional research. The CDO works closely with university leadership along with other departments and offices and acts as a conduit from leadership and others in the institution to identify appropriate analytics to address institutional questions and communicate results to the President and other audiences.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead the vision for the strategic use of data for decision-making at the College. Direct the collection, structure, analysis, and presentation of institutional data used to support policy formation and decision-making.
  • Oversee the Institutional Research (IR) staff, including a Senior Data Analyst and a Title V Data Analyst
  • Ensure the accurate and timely reporting of all institutional data required by Federal, State, and accreditation agencies and by campus administrators and committees.
  • Champion the integration of data sources and develop increased access to data to inform the mission of the College. Collaborate with the CIO on data governance and policies that support the use of Banner in business processes across the institution.
  • Perform analysis of large data sets from multiple sources, as a strategic partner for leadership.
  • Support student success efforts and initiatives with analyses and dashboards of data.
  • Manage the institution’s Tableau server, which includes the development of dashboards for senior leadership and for accessibility of data to stakeholders across the community.
  • Increase the ability for key data stewards/stakeholders to effectively use data including areas such as enrollment management, finance, student support services, assessment, institutional effectiveness, faculty and staff effectiveness, and assessment of academic program viability.
  • Provide strong leadership to ensure data integrity across all departments by working with the Registrar, IR and Information Technology Services (ITS), which includes all Census reporting.
  • Provide expert consultation to academic and administrative units on research methodology, data management, and data analysis and interpretation for their own programs of self-study and work with the Director of Assessment on planning and assessment activities. Provide support for the strategic planning process by providing appropriate data and trend analysis for informed decision-making.
  • Supervise the administration and provide analysis of selected institutional surveys, including the College’s Graduating Senior Survey (GSS), NSSE, Noel Levitz SSI, etc., and support the decentralized research and analysis activities of other college departments, including the development of surveys and other methods of data collection. Act as the liaison to the Higher Education Data Sharing Consortium (HEDS), to lead collection of surveys such a Title IX Campus Climate and Diversity.
  • Conduct special studies as requested by the President and senior leadership of the college.
  • Develop reports, presentations, and high level memos for the President and Board of Trustees.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in the quantitative discipline - social sciences, data science, statistics, industrial/financial engineering, or related field, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience.
  • Five or more years of work experience in institutional research or analytics-related contexts.
  • Demonstrated experience effectively communicating data analysis to organizational leaders and in public settings.
  • Demonstrated understanding of data governance and management practices.
  • Advanced knowledge of research design.
  • Experience with Ellucian Banner strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience with SQL.
  • Demonstrated successful experience managing and developing Business Intelligence Tools (preferably with Tableau)
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with various constituencies, including administrators, diverse student body, faculty, and staff.
  • Aptitude for identifying process inefficiencies, identifying solutions, and successfully implementing changes.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize multiple assignments.
  • Excellent written and oral communication, with demonstrated ability to communicate data and analysis to a lay audience.

Compensation will be competitive and will depend upon experience. The review of applications will begin immediately, and will continue until a successful candidate is named. The position is available beginning immediately.

Salary Range: $155,000-$175,000
